After School Program

For the children of the Santa Marta Public School : provided we find the necessary volunteers, our wish is to be able to offer an after-school program to all the children of Kinder and those of 1st to 6th grade. After-School lasts about 1 hour to 1 hour 1/2 after the regular school hours. Classes can be held in English where children are encouraged to participate in conversation or in Spanish. The classes can include arts and crafts, games, story telling, sports and music. These complement the formal academic material of the public school. Children are encouraged to develop their creativity and learn through hands-on activities.

We desperately need teachers for these courses : the schools of this region are lacking tremendously in the non-academic and language fields. Even the most simple arts and crafts projects are received with great enthusiasm by the children. Public school music programs are very limited, so are sports. The After-School program could also complement the academic program of the public school : some children would enormously benefit from extra courses in English language, math, science projects offered in a more informal and fun way. If you feel you could share something with these children, please let us know, even if you would be available only for one week or two. It does not matter if you speak no Spanish, we will find a way to make the course possible.

Let us know

  • when you are available to come and help us,
  • give us a brief description of the course you would be willing to offer,
  • a list of materials needed,
  • for what age group your course is designed, as well as
  • the maximum number of children who can enroll.

Salary for the teacher is $ 10 per class. Non-paid volunteers more than welcome of course !

Teachers and Volunteers, please contact the following people :

We need your financial support ! Tuition is free for all the children, but unfortunately we need to buy materials and supplies, pay for transportation, help some volunteers with room and board, etc...
