”Calling All Kids!”
Summer Day Camp 2008
By: Saskia Ellemeet and Maggie Jacobus, Escuelita co-chairs

We are pleased to announce that the children of greater Nosara will once again have the opportunity to enjoy escuelita!

Now in its eighth year, escuelita is a half-day camp that takes place during the summer break in January. Children enjoy arts and crafts, sports activities, games and weekly field trips, as well as participate in the creation and performance of an original theatrical production. Escuelita has grown to be wildly popular with the kids, with nearly 100 children participating last year! Escuelita is also an ideal opportunity for the community to get involved with area youths by supporting the camp with donations of time, talent, materials and funds (see “How You Can Support Escuelita” sidebar).

This year’s camp will run for four weeks, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – noon, starting Monday, January 7, 2008. The location is Santa Marta school. Transportation for area children is provided to and from camp each day and is graciously underwritten by area sponsors. This year’s escuelita will culminate with a festive faire produced by the participating children to which the entire community is invited.

“Treasure Nosara!” is the theme for this year’s camp, and the activities presented will focus on raising kid consciousness around the “treasure” of Nosara; namely, our extraordinary natural resources. In fun and creative ways, participating children will learn about the environment and how to take care of it through such eco-friendly practices as “reduce, reuse, recycle.”

The cost to attend all three weeks of escuelita is 1,500 colones (500 colones per week). Scholarships are available for children who are unable to pay the tuition. To sign up and receive their escuelita “passport,” children should come to the first day of camp on January 7th. Escuelita is geared for kids ages six-15 years of age. If you have questions regarding signing up, please contact Jeannette Vargas Ramírez at 840-8392 or janet0386@hotmail.com .

We thank all of those who have helped create and support escuelita over the years, including escuelita founder and tireless volunteer for seven years, Jolijn Verwest. We look forward to creating together, as a community, Escuelita 2008: “Treasure Nosara!”
